In 1930s Scott Labs was hired to carry out agricultural research in Kenya. Their focus was catalogue & cultivate to identify the most suitable varieties for farmers. 42 species were studied for productivity, quality, disease & drought resistance. Their findings were SL-28 & SL-34; complex, sparkling acidity, juicy body & super sweet, but not rust resistant. So Batian was developed in 2000s through cross breeding & is naturally more resistant - so greater yield, but also lessening the need for pesticides!
