In 2022 we visited Kenya for the first time and this is when we met Danson Wanyutu Karugondo and his brothers Geoffrey, Bernard and Eliud. Now, two years later, we are proud to release once again a coffee from Docha Estate, a coffee farm right outside Nairobi, run by the four brothers Karugondo who grew up here. The estate lies at 1650-1850 masl and spans 9 full hectares. The brothers know their lands inside out and cultivate it with the best possible care. The SL 28 and SL 34 varieties they grow here have deep roots, need little irrigation and do well on the volcanic soil. Meanwhile they fertilize their land with organic, homemade manure from cows and chickens to keep the farm in good condition and to create the best possible environment for the cherries to flourish in. When ripe, the cherries are handpicked, then pulped and fermented for 12 to 24 hours. After, they are washed, soaked and sundried on raised beds for 2 to 3 weeks. The brothers have been able to market the coffee under their own name, something we hope will happen more often in the future, in Kenya.
