Espresso A, Ethiopia

More than 1000 smallholder farmers contributed their cherries to this coffee lot. Guji is a rather young coffee region. It is so rich in (precious) stones like gold etc., that the region was off limits to people for decades. As the restrictions eased, the region became inhabited and people started cultivating coffee in the forested mountain areas. These smallholders do not yet have the means to process coffee themselves and so they sell it to washing stations. Through necessity, they discovered the benefits of forest- and shade cultivation, in so much that it has now become the benchmark of Guji coffee. Instead of replacing the already settled flora (and fauna) of the region with their seedlings, they planted them in the midst of it, creating a biodiverse environment in which coffee has become intertwined with the - relatively new - Guji culture.
